Spring in Banff: A Sneak Peek at Summer in the Rockies

Published on May 1, 2026

Spring in Banff is well underway, and unlike in some places where spring is defined by its distinct weather, Banff is not one of those places. In the Rockies, you can get the best of both worlds and experience the end of winter and welcome summer all in one day. Catch the last of the snow on the slopes and say hello to warm patio weather for the après. Spring is the best time to visit if you are looking to indulge in a variety of experiences.

Travelling in spring is highly recommended. The locals refer to it as “shoulder season,” meaning you are missing the two peak periods to travel in Banff. Now, missing that peak season isn’t truly “missing out”; it’s getting a taste of the best of both seasons without the busy crowds.

We’ve touched on the winter side of spring in our previous blog, so let’s equip you with the information you need if you are visiting on the summer end of spring in Banff.

Have an adventurous side? We’ve outlined a few of our favourite spring activities to enjoy on your trip to Banff. Not the most adventurous? Don’t fret, as there are lots of experiences for everyone. We know some of the top patio and spa experiences in town to relax and settle into vacation mode.

Let’s get into it!

Top Activities to do in Banff in Late Spring

Whether you are an avid hiker looking to scale the next big peak or a beginner looking to get into a new hobby, there is a trail for you! Here are some of our go-to local spring hikes for you to explore, listed from beginner to advanced.

  • Bow Falls: This beginner local hike is one for everyone. Just across the bridge from downtown Banff, this hike is just 1.2 km one way. The views while crossing the bridge alone are unmatched, with a perfect view of Cascade, Rundle, and Sulphur Mountains; the photo opportunities are endless. Continue along the wooded trail next to the Bow River, head up a few steps, and at the other end you will reach the viewpoint for the breathtaking Bow Falls. So, if you’re wanting a leisurely walk with your latte in hand, stop at Downtown Sally on your way and enjoy some of the best local mountain views.

  • Tunnel Mountain Summit: Easily accessible from downtown Banff, this moderate hike has beautiful 360° views of the Banff townsite, Mount Rundle, and the entire Bow Valley. It is just under 5 km round trip and can be done in less than 2 hours. Parking can be limited, but the trailhead is a quick walking distance from the town centre. This trail is the first to dry out, but be prepared by checking the trail report or renting a pair of ice spikes from Ultimate Sports before you head out.

  • Aylmer Lookout: The trailhead is easily accessible from town by bus or car. This hike is rated hard due to its length. There is no technical terrain, so it is accessible to all hikers, but we recommend you go prepared as it is a long day on the trail. Gather supplies like grab-and-go lunch from Sudden Sally and trail equipment from Ultimate Sports to ensure you have the best experience possible. The trail is approximately 23 km round trip and can take up to 8 hours to complete. Take in beautiful panoramic views of Lake Minnewanka on this gorgeous local trail.

E-biking is a great way to get around town and is widely enjoyed by locals on the go. You can explore some of Banff’s best biking routes with a little extra power pushing you along. You can take a guided tour, or you can rent from Ultimate Sports and explore one of our favourite trails listed here.

  • Golf Course Loop: Start by the river with breathtaking views of the Bow Falls. About a 10 km round trip, you will have beautiful views of Mount Rundle and Tunnel Mountain on this loop. There are usually lots of elk in this area, great for viewing from a safe distance (3 bus lengths) as you cruise on by.

  • Vermilion Lakes: This is a great trail for everyone. It is just under 9 km round trip if you go all the way to the third lake and back. Enjoy beautiful views of the lakes and the mountains as your backdrop.

  • Legacy Trail: Take in the scenery around you on this iconic bike ride through the Canadian Rockies. The Legacy Trail is a 22 km stretch from Banff to Canmore. Ride along the river and through the forest with beautiful mountain views looming above. You can go there and back for a full 44 km round trip, but it is not uncommon for locals and travellers alike to bike one way and return on local transit via ROAM Transit.

Something to note: as everything thaws, there is more wildlife present in the park, so make sure if you come across any wildlife while exploring that you leave plenty of room for them. We are in their home, so we need to respect their space. For more information on safe wildlife viewing, visit Parks Canada.

Some look for the thrills of adventure on vacation, and some are looking for that next best culinary experience. We’ve already laid out a few of our favourite adventures, so let’s dive into a few of the best patios in Banff to wind down after a long day.

Sudden Sally, the perfect place to wake up with a fresh cup of coffee. Enjoy one of their classic bennies with a morning mimosa and set the stage for the day ahead. On the go? Grab what you need from the café and start exploring what’s out there! Wanting to soak in the afternoon sunshine? Enjoy happy hour from 2pm to 5pm and get 50% off drinks and small plates.

Celebrating something special this spring? Endeavour to dine at Good Folk, a beautifully elevated dining experience. Experience crafted cocktails and refined Canadian flavours, all the best finishes to indulge in those special moments. Sit on their patio, bask in the warmth of the fire features, and savour the incredible views of Cascade Mountain.

Looking to get in on all the central Banff Ave excitement? Pacini and the Meatball offer delicious Italian-focused dining options with Banff Avenue-facing patios featuring views of Mt. Rundle. Whether you’re seeking an Aperol Spritz or a carb-heavy feast after adventure, either location has you covered.

Two of Banff’s best spas are located right along Banff Ave—perfect for unwinding after a day spent hiking, sightseeing, or exploring the Rockies in the spring sun. Whether you’re looking for a little relaxation between adventures or a full vacation reset, a spa treatment is the perfect way to slow down and recharge.

The Meadow Spa, located in the Moose Hotel and Suites, offers a range of luxurious treatments from massages and facials to pedicures. After your treatment, head up to the rooftop hot pools and soak while taking in sweeping views of Cascade Mountain paired with the fresh spring alpine air.

The Red Earth Spa, located in Banff Caribou Lodge, also offers an impressive collection of therapeutic and aesthetic treatments designed to help you fully reset. Spend an afternoon here relaxing and caring for body and mind, leaving you refreshed and ready for your next summer adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Bear Spray?

We do recommend you carry bear spray. With the seasons changing and bears coming out of hibernation, it is smart to carry it and be ready to use it. If you are staying in one of our properties, we have bear spray available at the front desk for rent, or you can rent it from Ultimate Sports.

What is the weather like?

Warm days, but chilly nights. There is still snow, and rain is possible, so be sure to pack a waterproof jacket, gloves, and a hat.

Is it crowded?

It is considered shoulder season, so it is significantly less busy as the seasons are changing. Tourism starts to pick up in Banff around the May long weekend.

Do I need a reservation for Banff dining?

We recommend making a reservation, as even though we are in shoulder season, restaurants can fill up quickly, especially the patios. Make a reservation for Sudden Sally, Good Folk, Pacini, or The Meatball through Open Table.

Do I need a Park Pass?

Yes, you can acquire a park pass online here: Banff Lake Louise

Alternatively, you can purchase it at the gates into the park coming from Calgary, or at the Visitor Centre located in town on Banff Ave.

Will I see Wildlife?

Spring is a great time to see wildlife. But please make sure you are doing so at a safe distance. Give them more space than you think (3 bus lengths), and if you can, stay in your vehicle. We are all guests in their home. Learn more about how to safely view wildlife in Banff here: Parks Canada

How should I get around Banff?

If you are staying within the town, it is very accessible for walking. However, there is great local transit through ROAM Transit. We provide complimentary ROAM bus passes to all our guests to use locally in the town of Banff. There are other routes available to Lake Louise or Canmore for a small fee. Learn more and plan your route here: ROAM Transit

Shuttles are available to each ski resort, and they pick up visitors out front of a few of our hotels:

  • Banff Rocky Mountain Resort
