Is Spring the Best Time to Visit Banff? A Winter-Lover’s Guide

Published on March 23, 2026

Spring in Banff is unlike anywhere else. It is a great opportunity to experience both winter and summer in this beautiful mountain landscape. As the days get warmer and longer, you can spend more time exploring. You can ski, hike, and bike all in one day. It is one of the best times of the year if you are looking for a little bit of everything.

“Shoulder season” is what Banff locals call the spring season. Summer is filled with bright sunny skies and deep blue lakes to take a dip in, while winter here is a top skiing destination, from groomers to backcountry. Spring blends both, allowing you to truly experience everything the Canadian Rocky Mountains have to offer. Not just a shoulder season, spring is endless experiences waiting to be explored!

Whether you’re catching the tail end of winter or getting that summer sunshine sneak peek, we’ve got a list of activities that will fit both itineraries. But let’s start with winter, because the snow will still sweep the peaks into the month of May.

Coming to Banff with a big sense of adventure? Here are some of our favourite ways to explore the Rockies in winter. Hoping to have more of a leisurely stay? We’ve got options for you too!

Top Activities to do in Banff in Early Spring

Experience two fantastic resorts this season: Lake Louise (closing May 3) and Sunshine Village (closing May 18).

March, April, and even May bring excellent spring skiing. Nights are still below zero, so the base stays solid, and the day brings beautiful bluebird skies. With the occasional dump, days can be powdery, but morning groomers set the tone for the day, and the sunny patios take the stage in the afternoon. Between both hills, there are over 280 runs to be explored.

Getting there? We recommend taking the ski shuttle to your resort of choice, as parking can get crazy on busier days.

Sunshine Shuttles stop at 3 of our hotels:

  • Banff Caribou Lodge
  • Fox Hotel and Suites
  • Banff Ptarmigan Inn

Lake Louise Shuttles stop at 4 of our hotels:

  • Banff Rocky Mountain Resort
  • Banff Caribou Lodge
  • Fox Hotel and Suites
  • Banff Ptarmigan Inn

Don’t have skis or don’t want to pack them? A range of rentals, from beginner to expert skiing and snowboarding, is available through Ultimate Sports.

Go off the beaten path and experience the Canadian Rockies from a different perspective. There is still plenty of snow on high-elevation trails to enjoy snowshoeing in the spring sunshine. Take a guided tour or head out with friends, enjoy seeing different landscapes and slowing down to take it all in.

Some trails we recommend:

  • Lake Minnewanka
  • Lake Louise Lakeshore
  • Fairview Lookout
  • Ink Pots
  • Spray River Loop
  • Sunshine Meadows

This adventure usually has great conditions in March and April, but the weather is always changing, so it is important to check for avalanche safety in certain areas as the seasons change.

You can rent snowshoes and extra gear in town at Ultimate Sports, located on Banff Avenue. Make sure to pack extra layers, hats, gloves, and sunscreen as the sunny days appear. Be aware of wildlife, view from a safe distance (3 bus lengths), and don’t follow their tracks. Carry bear spray as a precaution in warmer spring weather; if you are staying with one of our properties, you can rent bear spray on site or at Ultimate Sports. Additionally, please make sure you pack up any garbage and take it with you to the nearest garbage can. Help us keep the park clean and welcoming for all future guests and wildlife!

Two of the best spas in Banff are located conveniently on Banff Avenue. If you’re looking to relax after skiing all day or seeking a full reset and rejuvenation on your spring holiday, a spa treatment will transport you into deep relaxation mode.

The Meadow Spa, located in the Moose Hotel and Suites, offers luxurious treatments ranging from massages and facials to pedicures. Enjoy the treatment of your choice and then sink into rooftop hot pools and enjoy the views of Cascade Mountain.

The Red Earth Spa, located in Banff Caribou Lodge, also offers a fantastic array of therapeutic and aesthetic treatments so you experience a full reset. Relax and enjoy a day of treating your body and mind so you can feel refreshed and ready to take on your next adventure.

Still up for something to do after dinner? Or maybe the weather isn’t on your side? There are plenty of fun experiences to have with friends or family. These are a few of our favourites:

Eureka Escape Rooms: Step into an immersive and fully interactive puzzle room where you have to work with your team to complete the objective and escape within one hour. It’s fast-paced and requires excellent teamwork!

Lux Cinema: See the latest release at the Lux! You don’t have to wait until vacation ends to see that movie you’ve been waiting for. Tie it into your day, unwind after dinner with a sweet treat and some popcorn, and settle in for a great cinematic experience.

What to Bring This Spring

Whether you’re taking part in big adventures or taking it slow this spring, make sure you are packing appropriately. Being in Banff, the weather can change at the drop of a hat. So, make sure you pack that hat! Also be sure to pack warm layers and a rain jacket in case of surprise showers, and if there’s something you forget, Ultimate Sports can help you with those odds and ends you may need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Bear Spray?

We do recommend you carry bear spray. With the seasons changing and bears coming out of hibernation, it is smart to carry it and be ready to use it. If you are staying in one of our properties, we have bear spray available at the front desk for rent, or you can rent it from Ultimate Sports.

What is the weather like?

Warm days, but chilly nights. There is still snow, and rain is possible, so be sure to pack a waterproof jacket, gloves, and a hat.

Is it crowded?

It is considered shoulder season, so it is significantly less busy as the seasons are changing. Tourism starts to pick up in Banff around the May long weekend.

Do I need a Park Pass?

Yes, you can acquire a park pass online here: Banff Lake Louise

Alternatively, you can purchase it at the gates into the park coming from Calgary, or at the Visitor Centre located in town on Banff Ave.

Will I see Wildlife?

Spring is a great time to see wildlife. But please make sure you are doing so at a safe distance. Give them more space than you think (3 bus lengths), and if you can, stay in your vehicle. We are all guests in their home. Learn more about how to safely view wildlife in Banff here: Parks Canada

How should I get around Banff?

If you are staying within the town, it is very accessible for walking. However, there is great local transit through ROAM Transit. We provide complimentary ROAM bus passes to all our guests to use locally in the town of Banff. There are other routes available to Lake Louise or Canmore for a small fee. Learn more and plan your route here: ROAM Transit

How do I get to the ski resorts?

Shuttles are available to each ski resort, and they pick up visitors out front of a few of our hotels:

  • Banff Rocky Mountain Resort
  • Banff Caribou Lodge
  • Fox Hotel and Suites
  • Banff Ptarmigan Inn
